Portuguese Bean Cake Recipe

Portuguese Bean Cake also known as bolo de feijão is a very popular dessert in Portugal. It is a very rich Portuguese dessert that is usually made with red or white beans. This Portuguese bean cake recipe is quick and easy to prepare and makes an everyday perfect dessert that is packed with protein.

This Portuguese bean cake features a soft moist dense crumb with a deliciously rich buttery and chocolatey taste with a hint of vanilla and cinnamon, it tastes absolutely amazing.

Ingredients For Portuguese Bean Cake:

  • 1 can red beans or white beans (425 grams), drained
  • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter (113 grams), room temperature
  • 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar (250 grams)
  • 5 large eggs (250 grams)
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder (10 grams)
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda (3 grams)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract (10 grams)
  • 3/4 cup cocoa powder (75 grams)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon (2.6 grams)
  • 1 tablespoon water (15 grams)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (3 grams)

Instructions Portuguese Bean Cake:

  1. Place the red or white kidney beans, salt, sugar, vanilla extract, and one egg into the blender and blitz for 60 seconds until the mixture is liquified.
  2. Add the butter and pulsate for 40 seconds. Clean the side of the blender and add the cocoa powder, cinnamon, baking powder, baking soda, and the rest of the eggs. Blend for 45 seconds or until the mixture is homogenized.
  3. Preheat the oven to 180°C (355°F). Grease a bundt cake pan with butter, you can also use a square, rectangle, or 8-inch round cake pan.
  4. Transfer the bean cake batter to the cake pan with the bean cake batter and Bake for 30-35 minutes. Stick a toothpick into the cake, if it comes out clean then the cake is baked.
  5. Once the cake is baked remove it from the oven and allow it to cool before flipping it over.
  6. Dust with some icing sugar or cocoa powder.
  7. Serve and Enjoy!
