Traditional Apple Pie Recipe

A family secret for over a 100 years, make this easy traditional apple pie recipe in just 5 simple steps process. Delicious apple filling with just the right amount of spice, this apple pie crust will melt in your mouth. Did you know that apple pie dates back to the 14th century some might argue even earlier. There is proof that the Dutch were serving apple pie to their family and friend in the sixteen hundreds. The first apple pie recipe that was printed was by Geoffrey Chaucer back in 1381. Sir Geoffrey Chaucer is recognized as a legend in English Literature and best known as one of the greatest poets of all time. Poetry and apple both pleasantly sweet.

Traditional Pie Crust

  • 300 grams all purpose flour 2.4 cups
  • 1.5 grams Salt or pinch of salt
  • 170 grams Butter Unsalted 6 oz or 0.75 cup into small pieces
  • 90 grams Water 6 tbsp
  • 1 egg beaten for glazing

Traditional Apple Filling

  • 750 grams Granny Smith Apples 1 lb 10 oz ( Peeled cored and sliced )
  • 133 grams brown sugar 2/3 cups or 4.7oz
  • 2.6 grams Cinnamon 1 tsp
  • 1.3 grams all spice 1/2 tsp
  • 15 grams Water 0.5oz / 1 tbsp


  • 1-Pie Dough , Start by add the salt to the all purpose flour and sift 2-3 times into a large bowl. Then add the cut up pieces of butter into the flour and start working in the butter into a crumble. Add the water and work it into the dough. Cover the dough and refrigerate it for 30-60 minutes.

  • Preheat oven to to 220C / 425F. Remove pie crust and sheet the dough using a rolling pin to 10-11 inches and to 3-4mm thickness and place into 9 inch / 23 centimeters pie pan or aluminium deep dish pan and refrigerate until filling is prepared. Save the remaining pie dough to cover the pie with, you also can sheet this dough and cut into strips of 9 inch by 1/2 to make a woven lattice for the top of the pie.

  • Make the Apple Filling, Start by adding the cinnamon, all spice and sugar to the sliced granny smith apples and water and mix well together.Place and pack down the filling into pie pastry evenly to the pie dough rim. Using a brush or damp finger lightly wet the rim and place pie dough to or lattice.

  • Use the remaining pie dough trimmings and cut out leafs to decorate the pie crown, slight wet, position and attach to the top. Brush with egg and make a couple of slits on the top of pie pastry to allow steam to escape during baking. If you are making a lattice there is no need for the slits.

  • Place apple pie into preheated oven and bake at 425F/220C for 15 minutes then drop the oven dwn to 350F/1800C and bake for additional 35-40 minutes or until pie crust is lightly golden brown. Chill and service with some vanilla ice cream.
