Ingredients For Original German Sweet Chocolate Cake:

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 package baker’s German sweet chocolate (4oz)
  • 4 large eggs (separated)
  • 1 cup butter or oil
  • 2 cups granulated sugar 
  • 4 large eggs (separated) 
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 

Ingredients For Coconut-Pecan Frosting:

  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 eggs yolks (beaten)
  • 1 cup evaporated milk
  • 1/2 cup milk 
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 3/4 cups shredded coconut
  • 1 1/4 cup pecans (chopped)

Instructions For Coconut Pecan Frosting:

  1. Add sugar, evaporated milk, sugar, egg yolks, vanilla extract, and butter into a medium-size pot.
  2. Over medium heat, cook the mixture stirring constantly until thickens.
  3. Remove from heat and mix in the shredded coconut and pecan.
  4. Allow it to cool until thick enough to use as a spread.

Instruction For Original German Sweet Chocolate Cake:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350ºF and line with parchment paper the bottom of a 9-inch round or layer cake pan.
  2. Add the flour, salt, and baking soda to a bowl and whisk together. Set aside.
  3. Add the water into a pot and bring to a boil. Turn off the heat and add the chocolate and melt. Set aside.
  4. Add the butter and sugar into a bowl and cream until smooth. Then add the egg yolks and mix.
  5. Combine the melted chocolate and vanilla extract with the butter mixture and stir together.
  6. Add the flour and buttermilk and beat alternating them.
  7. Add the egg white into a bowl and beat on high until stiff peaks.
  8. Fold in the egg white mixture with the cake batter until well combined.
  9. Pour in the batter and bake for 30-35 minutes. Check the center by inserting a toothpick, if it comes out clean the cake is ready.
  10. Remove the cake and cook in the baking pan for 10 minutes then remove and place on a cooling rack.
  11. Once the cake is completely cooled, frost and shred some chocolate on top to decorate.
  12. Serve and enjoy!

    I love this recipe, but it says it is German. It is not German. It is American. This comes from the back of the outer sleeve of German’s Sweet Baking Chocolate, and that is how it got its name. The man who created the presweetened chocolate for baking was named German.
