Turkish Künefe Dessert Recipe

This crispy Turkish kunefe dessert recipe is unbelievably easy to prepare and taste so amazingly good. Turkish kunefe is one of Turkey’s most beloved desserts and originated in the Turkish region of Hatay Antakya.

This kunefe dessert is very similar to the Lebanese Knafeh and is prepared using a special aluminum plate called Kadaifi pan or kunefe plate which can be purchased online or at your local department store. If you don’t have a kunefe plan then you can you a regular 8-9 inch non-stick skillet.

As I mentioned this Turkish kunefe dessert recipe is super easy to make, all you need is kadayif, cheese, butter, molasses, water, sugar, and green pistachios.

What is Kadayif? 

Kadaif is a type of Turkish spun pastry that resembles noodles that are essentially hair-thin. Kadaif is made by mixing flour and water that is then processed through a special sieve where it gets cooked on at a high temperature on a pan or industrial metal plate. Kadaif pastry is typically used to make Middle Eastern desserts like Kunefe, Knafeh, Kunafa, Kunafeh, Konafi, and Baklava.

Ingrendients:  

Kunefe

  • 500 g kadayif
  • 250 g künefe cheese or shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 100 g butter
  • 1 teaspoon molasses

Kunefe Syrup

  • 2 glasses of water
  • 2 cups sugar
  • Lemon juice

Kunefe Garnish

  • green pistachio

INSTRUCTIONS: 

Syrup

  • Pour water and sugar in a large saucepan. When the sugar starts to melt, add the lemon drops and wait for it to slightly caramelize, the color should be amber.

Kunefe

  • In a separate pot, add the butter and molasses and cook on low heat until butter is melted stirring occasionally.
  • Spread the butter molasses mixture into the bottom of the künefe plate or 8 inch non-stick skillet.
  • Place half of the kadayif onto the bottom of the butter molasses mixture in the kunefe plate and press into the butter mixture.
  • Add the cheese in the middle and cover the tray with the remaining kadayif pressing firmly downwards and along the sides.
  • Place the kunefe pan on to stove top and cook on medium low heat for a bout 3-5 minutes.
  • Then flip the kadaifi onto a plate add a tablespoon of butter and allow it to melt, then carefully slide the kadaifi back into the kunefe pan or skillet. Cool for additional 3-5 minutes or until the kunefe is crispy.
  • Pour the kunefe syrup onto the top of the kadayif.
  • Serve once syrup has been absorbed with crushed pistachio.
